Warrington Borough Council launches decarbonisation support for businesses

Warrington Borough Council has announced the launch of the innovative Race to Zero service, aimed at assisting local businesses in their journey towards decarbonisation. This pioneering initiative, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF), provides businesses in Warrington with access to invaluable business advice and grant support to accelerate their efforts in reducing carbon emissions.

The Race to Zero service is a collaborative effort between Warrington Borough Council and sustainable business experts Groundwork, who have been appointed to deliver the programme on behalf of the council. With a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and economic prosperity, this partnership aims to empower businesses in Warrington to adopt sustainable practices while fostering growth and innovation.

“Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, and it is imperative that we take decisive action to address it,” said Greville Kelly, Director for Business at Groundwork. “Through the Race to Zero service, we are helping local businesses with the resources and support they need to transition to a low-carbon economy. By working together, we can build a more sustainable future for Warrington and beyond.”

The Race to Zero service offers a range of tailored support packages designed to meet the specific needs of businesses at every stage of their decarbonisation journey. From expert advice on implementing energy-efficient practices to financial assistance through grants and incentives, participating businesses will receive comprehensive support to help them reduce their carbon footprint and drive positive change.

“We are thrilled to be working alongside Warrington Borough Council to deliver the Race to Zero service,” continues Greville. “As champions of sustainable business practices, we are committed to supporting businesses in Warrington as they embrace the transition to a greener future. Together, we can create a thriving economy that is both environmentally responsible and socially inclusive.”

Warrington Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for climate change, sustainability and the environment, Cllr Hitesh Patel, said: “We recognise the crucial role our business community has to play in tackling the climate emergency, and our new ‘Race to Zero’ initiative will provide valuable support to help businesses introduce more environmentally friendly practices and reduce their carbon footprint.

“It’s a great way for businesses to access expert advice, funding, practical tools, and resources to make informed decisions and implement effective sustainability strategies. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate a commitment to environmental responsibility, a quality that’s increasingly important to customers and consumers.

“I urge all Warrington businesses, big or small, to register for ‘Race to Zero’ and take a proactive step towards a greener future.”
